South Carolina State University occurs as historically black university located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. A school was founded inside 1872 as the South Carolina Agricultural & Mechanical Institute. Until 1896 it was a share of Claflin College. Inside 1896, the school became an independent l&-grant institution & was renamed Colored Normal Industrial Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina. Within 1952, the school's title was changed to South Carolina State College. A school's mission was expanded within 1992 to include graduate software, & a school's todays title was adopted.

S.C. State's colors come garnet red and blue and their nickname is the Bulldogs. S.C. State sports teams participate around NCAA Section We personally (I-AA for football) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Essie Mae Washington-Williams, the oldest girl of Strom Thurmond, is an SCSU alum.
